County considers permanent drug-return program

PORT ANGELES- The Clallam County Board of Health has drafted a new ordinance designed to tackle the issue of unused or unwanted prescription drugs in the home. The goal of the ordinance is to provide a convenient way for county residents to get their unused drugs out of the house and away from those who might abuse them, but to have the program financed and operated by the drug producers.

We asked county health officer Dr. Chris Frank how it would differ from the current drug take-back program:


The idea is to set up kiosks, something like secure mailboxes, at pharmacies and hospitals where customers can drop off the medications they don’t want. Fran says it’s working well in other counties:


The county holds a first public hearing on the ordinance this week.
