Lightning touches off fires in ONP

August 18th, 2008 - 5:49am

(Port Angeles) -- Olympic National Park officials were kept busy yesterday with a series of lightning started wildfires.

Park officials say at least four fires were started by a lightning storm that moved through the area yesterday afternoon.

Most of the fires were small, but one was large enough that crews were sent to take care of it. That fire burned a section of trees near the Deer Park campground and ranger station.

Rain moved into the area later in the day helping quench some of the blazes.

Forecasters expect cooler, wetter weather for the next few days will help ease the wildfire threat.
